I spent 4 weeks traveling with my backpack in Vietnam from December 1997 to January 1998. Flying into Hanoi traveling south by trains and minibuses and flying out of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). Most people traveling Vietnam seems to start either in Saigon and travel south to north, leaving from Hanoi or as in my case traveling north to south. This gives the nice opportunity to collect recent traveling information from people going in the opposite direction as yourself. During my journey I visited the following places: Hanoi, The Northern mountains (Sapa, Bacha), Perfume Pagoda, Halong bay and Catba Island, Hue, The DMZ, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Saigon, Cu Chi Tunnels and The Mekong Delta. I enjoyed traveling in Vietnam except for one bad isolated incident at Catba Island in Halong bay. Vietnam is a beautiful country with an interesting history and interesting people. Take the time to sit down at one of the small stalls where the other guests are only Vietnamese and have great fun talking to the friendly locals (which in return will have great fun talking to you!). Buying a Vietnamese phrase book (sold everywhere in Vietnam) will make it even more funny.
